Program Description:

This faculty-led program will provide nursing students with an exceptional experience that will contribute to both their personal and professional goals. Students will learn about healthcare in a global setting by working together with nurses and doctors in a hospital and in clinics, where they will connect with local people and experience their cultures and traditions firsthand. Students will provide a community service that will address an identified need for the village, i.e. malaria prevention, dental hygiene, importance of immunizations, first aid.

This program will introduce students to the core concepts of community health nursing and provide students with an opportunity to experience nursing in a developing country. There will be a week of didactic prior to traveling abroad where objectives for NURS 4603 will be met. The student will explore topics surrounding disparities of health care in poorer countries, develop nursing skills in a hospital and clinic environment, and develop cultural competency in NURS 4613.



Students must:

          Complete a minimum of 24 credit hours* by the beginning of the program abroad

          Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better at the time of application

Be enrolled in the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing and have passed all first semester courses in nursing by the beginning of the program abroad

Complete NURS 3422 Nursing Concepts: Foundations of Professional Practice by the beginning of the program abroad

*Students who have completed less than 24 credit hours may be admissible upon recommendation of faculty leader with support of the dean of the sponsoring college.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze the common concepts of community health nursing. 
  2. Apply research-based knowledge from nursing theory and other disciplines in planning care for individuals, families, and the community. 
  3. Use information and health care technologies in the study of community health nursing. 
  4. Utilize evidence-based practices to guide health teaching, health counseling, screening, outreach, disease and outbreak investigation, referral, and follow-up throughout the lifespan. 
  5. Discuss the implications of healthcare policy on issues of access, equity, affordability, and social justice in healthcare delivery especially for vulnerable populations. 
  6. Understand one's role and participation in emergency preparedness and disaster response with an awareness of environmental factors and the risks they pose to self and clients.
  1. Conduct comprehensive and focused physical, behavioral, psychological, spiritual, socioeconomic, and environmental assessments of health and illness parameters in communities, using developmentally and culturally appropriate approaches.
  2. Implement holistic, patient centered care that reflects an understanding of human growth and development, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical management, and nursing management in communities.
  3. Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team, including the patient and the patient's support network.
  4. Deliver compassionate, patient-centered, evidence-based care that respects patient and family preferences.
  5. Provide appropriate patient teaching that reflects developmental stage, age, culture, spirituality, patient preferences, and health literacy considerations to foster patient engagement in their care.
  6. Implement evidence-based nursing interventions as appropriate for managing the care of communities and promoting health across the lifespan.
  7. Monitor client outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of psychobiological interventions.
  8. Create a safe care environment that results in high quality patient outcomes.
  9. Revise the plan of care based on an ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes.
  10. Demonstrate clinical judgment and accountability for patient outcomes when delegating to and supervising other members of the healthcare team.
  11. Demonstrate the application of psychomotor skills for the efficient, safe, and compassionate delivery of patient care.
  12. Demonstrate flexibility for the ambiguity and unpredictability of the world and its effect on the healthcare system as related to nursing practice.


Ghana Basket MarketStudents will be sharing a room with one other student. The first night we will be in the capital city, where we will be staying at the AYE Cultural Center before traveling the next day to Bolgatanga. The motel in Bolgatanga will also have shared rooms that include running water, electricity and a bathroom. There is also a restaurant on the site.


Students will travel to local villages within a 30 mile radius. Specific excursions include visiting basket weavers and carvers, attending a cultural event with African dance and drumming, visiting a crocodile reserve during the stay in Bolgatanga elephant park, and visiting Elmina Slave Castle.

Students are welcome to accompany faculty to church on Sundays. Sunday meals will be at the faculty residence in Bolgatanga with family and friends in Zaare Village.



Financial aid and scholarships are available to U of A students.

In many cases, you can also use your current scholarships and financial aid to help finance your program. If you receive scholarships, grants, or loans as a U of A student, please contact your Financial Aid Advisor in Silas Hunt Hall (479-575-3806) to see how much of your current aid package you’ll be able to utilize towards this summer study abroad program or to apply for loans. Participants on this program may also be eligible to apply for these institutional and national scholarships below. Criteria for scholarships vary, and students should read eligibility requirements carefully.
