Program Description:

Arcadia - U of Otago Banner
Study in New Zealand's oldest university town

The University of Otago is the oldest university in New Zealand and ranked in the top 1% of universities globally, with world-class facilities and extremely high student satisfaction ratings on all aspects of university life. It is also the only university in the country where 85% of the Kiwi students are from outside Dunedin. Most students are housed on the streets within a mile radius of the campus, making for a warm and socially vibrant student community. Everyone makes friends at Otago.

Dunedin is a fun and active seaside college town, allowing ample opportunity to engage with kiwi life. Dunedin is perched near the end of the South Island with penguin colonies and seals on nearby shores. It is within easy reach of the Lord of the Rings scenery of Central Otago which is much favored by hikers and skiers.

Otago students take advantage of the plethora of courses in the sciences and humanities. Favored subject areas include geology, environmental science, marine science, exercise science, neuroscience, and psychology in the sciences. And philosophy, religious studies, theatre studies, Maori studies, education, film and media studies, and anthropology and archeology in the arts and humanities. Many science courses use the environment around Otago as their laboratory and involve a field study component creating opportunities to get out and experience the real New Zealand. Regardless of the courses you choose, you can expect to look at the world in new ways.

  • University of Otago is a social hub with many opportunities for live music and theatre, and has traditions of its own including Wednesday night at Refuel.

  • There are over 140 clubs and societies. Some of the most popular among our students are the tramping (hiking) club and snow sports club.

  • Our Otago staff in New Zealand are happy to link you to UniCrew and other volunteer organizations and opportunities.

  • University of Otago is regularly ranked alongside Oxford and Cambridge as one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. Modeled on Edinburgh in Scotland, Dunedin is one of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • Travel to fascinating places of interest that enhance your cultural immersion and give a meaningful context to your academic courses, through Arcadia's planned Excursions and Activities.
