Program Description:
Overview
This study abroad option is available for students as an alternative to our exchange program at the Callaghan campus, situated in Newcastle, Australia. Given the limited exchange placements currently available, this is a great alternative.

The university is similar in size to the U of A, with more than 35,500, including over 7,800 international students from more than 80 countries.  The university has a vibrant research culture and has enjoyed strong and increasing success in research performance. They hold a unique place in the Australian higher education sector as the most research-intensive university outside of an Australian capital city. Their research strengths lie in the important areas of health, energy and the environment, as well as science and engineering.

As with all exchanges, you will be largely independent during your semester or year abroad, but you have plenty of support. During your O-week (orientation week), there are a few days allotted to showcasing all the possible clubs and societies, from quidditch to surfing to the i-lead program.

Location
Newcastle is Australia's second oldest city (after Sydney), is New South Wales' second largest, and the sixth largest in Australia. Lieutenant John Shortland found a rich seam of coal while pursuing escaped convicts in the area in 1791.
A lively port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline, Newcastle boasts wonderful beaches, a low cost of living, a very favorable climate, a casual lifestyle, and it's not far from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales. Its population of 350,000 supports a thriving business and commercial sector and an excellent network of leading health care and educational facilities. Newcastle offers all the usual city comforts, such as restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centers and nightclubs.

Newcastle features 10 beaches with 5 within walking distance of the city centre. Stockton Beach, located just north of Newcastle, is 10 km long and can be seen stretching into the distance from many vantage points in the city.

Academics
This study abroad offers an educational experience that allows U of A undergraduates, particularly education, engineering and business majors, an opportunity to benefit from academic programs for a semester or year, while keeping on track to graduate from the U of A.

From Australian studies to performing arts to environmental science, the University of Newcastle offers a wide variety of courses. Industrial engineering students, in particular, will find a large variety of pre-approved courses in which to enroll.

Costs
Students will be assessed University of Newcastle study abroad tuition per semester. This fee will be paid by the U of A on behalf of the student and the charge will be placed on the student's ISIS account, to be paid by the start of the term abroad.  Additionally, students are responsible for their round-trip airfare, housing, meals, local transportation, books, passport, student visa, and personal expenses.  The independent nature of this program allows students to determine their own extracurricular activities, leaving flexibility not only in free time but also in the budget.

Scholarships and Financial Aid
Financial aid and scholarships are available to U of A students. Students receiving a Pell grant should look into the Gilman International Scholarship. And all students should read through our scholarship page for more info on funding opportunities and deadlines.  Additionally, in most cases, you can also use your current scholarships and financial aid to help finance your semester in Australia.

Additional Information
Housing
Students are responsible for finding independent housing, but they will be assisted during the orientation week offered by the international office at Newcastle, with many options available to students near the beach and close to campus.
