Calling All Environmental Sciences, Physics & Math students

Spend eight weeks earning six credits this summer while participating in significant environmental research in a distinct region of southern Spain! This STEM summer research program is based at the Andalusian Institute for Earth System Research (IISTA), one of Spain’s leading institutes for environmental research, in cooperation with the University of Granada.

Explore your field of research in-depth through this exciting study abroad research program in Spain that fits in with your program of study at home. This is a perfect opportunity for STEM students interested in physics, math, meteorology, and environmental science to complete independent research, gain impressive skills and experience toward future opportunities, and stay on track for graduation.

  • Projects are available in the following areas: Atmospheric Science/Meteorology; Environmental Health; Physics & Math

  • Prior project examples include: On the relationship between air pollution and noise levels in the Granada Urban Area; Can pollen particle matter be monitored by Sun-Photometric Techniques?; and Atmospheric particles influence on clouds: Why are those clouds there?

  • All research is conducted in English. Some basic conversational Spanish is helpful to navigate daily life in Granada, though is not a prerequisite for participation.

  • You will have in-depth discussions with your research mentor before arriving in Spain to begin work on your proposal.

  • This is particularly beneficial if you are aiming for graduate school in a scientific discipline.

  • IISTA offers a research program focused on studies into the Physics of the Atmosphere. Projects in this field are ideal for physics, math, and environmental science students.

  • Explore fascinating places of interest that enhance your cultural immersion and give a meaningful context to your academic courses through Arcadia's planned Excursions and Activities.
