Live and learn in the heart of Spain's vibrant and multicultural capital city this summer! Designed for students from all academic backgrounds, this program in Madrid invites you to spend one six-week block (or up to two blocks) of your summer earning academic credits while traveling around the most populous city of Spain.
When class is in session at CIEE Madrid, your courses will be delivered in English and complemented with immersive co-curricular activities designed to increase your intercultural understanding of the city. Outside the classroom, you will have the unique opportunity to enjoy enriching seasonal summer celebrations, including the Madrid Pride Parade, the San Isidro festival commemorating the patron saint of the city, the major summer festival Fiesta de San Lorenzo, and many music festivals across jazz, rock, and electronic genres.
Build Your Summer Adventure
Select one or two six-week blocks at any CIEE Open Campus Block location. Stay in Paris for both blocks or go mobile and spend your second block in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Madrid, Monteverde, Rome, Santiago, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, or Yucatan.
Visit the world heritage site of El Escorial – the largest Renaissance building in the world – built under the reign of King Philip II of Spain in the 1500s. Located in the northern mountains – about a one-hour drive north of Madrid city – El Escorial gives visitors a view of daily life in the royal court and its impressive architecture, where decisions were made at the height of the Spanish Empire. Students also have an opportunity to explore the neighboring 18th-century village of San Lorenzo.
Other Cultural Activities
Explore beyond Madrid with day trips to the medieval city of Toledo and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Alcalá de Henares.
Discover the flavors of Spain while learning to cook. Learn the correct type of rice to use to make authentic paella and try your hand at flipping a Spanish tortilla.
Is the outdoors more your style? Try kayaking and hiking to beat the heat, or dip into one of Madrid´s many public swimming pools while learning about Spain´s approach to environmental preservation.
Visit the theaters, cafés, and luxury shops of the Champs-Élysées.
Treat yourself to a uniquely Spanish cultural experience in a workshop where Flamenco dance and music is performed live
